SJNY Adds Family Nurse Practitioner Programs

By Brian Harmon
St. Joseph’s University, New York took a bold step in addressing the pressing need for advanced healthcare professionals with the fall launch of master’s and advanced certificate programs in Family Nurse Practitioner.

In response to the increasing demand for skilled practitioners capable of delivering comprehensive healthcare across the lifespan, the new programs position students to excel in the dynamic field of advanced nursing practice.

The program’s strategic once-a-week on-campus schedule over three years caters to the needs of working nurses, giving them flexibility without compromising the program’s academic rigor.

As the students progress in the programs, they develop advanced clinical skills, engage in evidence-based practices, and learn patient-centered care, laying a solid foundation for a successful career as a family nurse practitioner.

“We are proud to add these new programs to our offerings for students,” said Maria Fletcher, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.E., associate dean for nursing and associate professor at SJNY. “St. Joseph’s has a long history of preparing students for careers in high-demand fields, including nursing and healthcare.

“With these new programs, we look forward to educating the family nurse practitioners that are highly needed in the healthcare industry,” she added.

The University now has four graduate nursing programs at its Brooklyn and Long Island campuses. The others are Nursing Education, Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist and Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.

New Graduate Education Degrees

In its education department, SJNY is also now offering master’s degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and in Special Education with an Annotation in Severe and Multiple Disabilities with Initial Certification.

The TESOL program is tailored for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in child study or a concentration in adolescence education. It equips students with a solid grasp of English as an additional language, emphasizing literacy and language teaching techniques. Additionally, it fosters proficiency in teaching core subjects in both the students’ native language and English.

The M.A. in Special Education with an Annotation in Severe and Multiple Disabilities with Initial Certification prepares students for initial certification in New York State Students with Disabilities (all grades), as well as to receive a New York State Annotation for Severe and Multiple Disabilities (pre-kindergarten through grade 12).

The online courses in both graduate education programs are taught synchronously, which allows students to interact with faculty and classmates in real time.
