President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., again landed on City & State’s Brooklyn Power 100 list for 2023. The annual list recognizes the New York City borough’s most politically influential people in education, government, business, advocacy and nonprofits.

Sold-out NYC Shows
Comedian and actor Chris Distefano ’06 sold out New York City shows at Radio City Music Hall and The Theater at Madison Square Garden in September. The Brooklyn Campus Hall of Fame basketball alumnus continues to travel the country on his comedy tour, while also hosting two popular podcasts, “Chrissy Chaos” and “Hey Babe.”
Making a Difference
Dr. Maria Fletcher, associate dean for nursing and associate professor, earned a 2023 Herald Excellence in Healthcare Award from Herald Community Newspapers and Richner Communications, Inc., for her dedication and commitment to making a difference in the health and wellbeing of others. She has worked extensively in many areas of nursing, including public health and maternal and child health. She has been an instructor at St. Joseph’s since 1989.
Excellence and Impact
Raymond D’Angelo, Ph.D., professor and chairperson of the Department of Sociology, received the S. Mary Florence Burns Award for Teaching Excellence and Impact in April. The honor is presented to an extraordinary Brooklyn Campus professor who embodies the characteristics and legacy of S. Mary Florence Burns and is given only when a candidate is deemed worthy.

Once a trailblazer…
St. Joseph’s alumna Sandra Lindsay ’99, DHSc, made history again in September, becoming the first person in the United States to receive the latest version of the COVID-19 vaccine. In December 2020, Dr. Lindsay — formerly a critical care nurse manager at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and now Northwell Health’s vice president of Public Health Advocacy — became the first person to be vaccinated in America for COVID-19.
Honoring a Dedicated Alumna
The walkway outside of Founders Hall heading to the Dillon Center on the Brooklyn Campus has been named for Joan Reardon Dillon ’56 to recognize her lifetime of dedication to the University. She has served on many boards and committees, and frequently volunteers her time at St. Joseph’s.
Skyline Athlete of the Year
Joe Sanguedolce, now a senior on the Long Island Campus’ baseball team, was the 2023 Skyline Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Golden Eagles’ second baseman earned a 4.0 GPA, while leading the team in hits and runs scored.
Among the Best
For more than two decades, SJNY has been named one of the nation’s top universities by U.S. News & World Report. This fall, St. Joseph’s was again ranked among the nation’s top universities in the Regional Universities – North category, moving up three spots to No. 45. SJNY also was ranked No. 7 among the Top Ten Private Colleges by Military Friendly®, recognizing SJNY as one of the best institutions for service member learning.
