Listening and action. Combining the two will fuel the success of David Gonzalez, the new student life director at St. Joseph’s University’s Brooklyn Campus.

The young administrator is committed to transforming student life by actively listening to students’ feedback.

“Listening to others, gathering assessment data, learning from colleagues, and gathering critical feedback to create an institutional environment of inclusion and satisfaction that keeps students at the University and have pride to be a student here,” Mr. Gonzalez said, outlining his vision for student life at the vibrant campus in Clinton Hill.

“We are learning that students want very specific programs and events, and we are working to ensure it happens,” he added. “The longer term goal is to better integrate student organizations in taking the lead in major campus events.”

On the job since last summer, Mr. Gonzalez, 36, plans to foster a sense of community and inclusion among the diverse student body. And he’ll do it with a humble perspective.

“I don’t think I’m the smartest guy in the room,” he said, “But I do believe I am smart enough to value the input of students and others.”

He insisted this approach will enhance the sense of belonging among students.

Mr. Gonzalez kicked off his student life career at Capital University. He oversaw fraternity and sorority life programs, student organizations and new student orientation.

After gaining valuable experience, he moved to New York City and spent seven years at NYU specializing in leadership development programs, assessment, risk management and compliance, along with efforts in championing diversity, equity and inclusion policies and programs. His path eventually led him to Long Island University, where he was an associate dean before finding his way to SJNY.

St. Joseph’s focus on community, together with the importance the University places on academics and co-curricular activities, attracted Mr. Gonzalez.

When asked about the pivotal role a quality student life team plays in the well-being of an institution, Mr. Gonzalez said, “Students will always recall their academics and work, but more often than not, recall the friends, people, experiences and community the University creates for them.

“These experiences trickle to them having an affinity for the institution, more likely to stay, and come back as proud alumni,” he continued. “Student Life is the catalyst for creating such experiences and environments to foster their growth and community.”

At the Brooklyn Campus, Mr. Gonzalez has already made significant strides toward enhancing student life.

“I’ve had a couple of interactions with students who were in need of assistance,” he said. “They found themselves to be a bit overwhelmed, coming from out of state, in addition to balancing the start of the semester workload.

“When I met with the student and shared what was going on with other staff, they immediately jumped in to help; there was no hesitation,” he continued. “I think these instances show how dedicated SJNY is to their students and their success.”
