A message from
DONALD R. BOOMGAARDEN, PH.D.
As I reflect on the stories featured on the following pages, I am deeply inspired by the passion and resilience of our community, and I am filled with a tremendous sense of gratitude.
Pope John Paul II perhaps said it best when, at the dawn of the new millennium, he advised us all “to remember the past with gratitude, to live the present with enthusiasm, and to look forward to the future with confidence.”
Guided by the seemingly infinite wisdom of our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph, and driven by our motto, Esse non videri — “To be, not to seem,” our community members beautifully combine their appreciation for yesterday, their excitement for today and their optimism for tomorrow.
St. Joseph’s students again are traveling to all points of the globe, taking on transformational study abroad opportunities and learning as much about themselves as they are about the cultures in which they immerse themselves. Our staff and faculty continue to inform our students, as well as society, with groundbreaking projects and inspiring research. And our alumni remain steadfast in helping others and changing the world for the better.
I hope you enjoy this issue of SJNY Magazine. Upon reading it, I trust that you will agree with me that it serves as a testament to the gratitude, enthusiasm and optimism that permeate across our University community.
Sincerely,
President
