SJNY Connect’s Mentoring Program Returns This Fall

By Brian Harmon
St. Joseph’s University has announced the fall return of its SJNY Connect Mentoring Program, an initiative run by the Office of Alumni Engagement that connects students with alumni mentors to foster professional development, personal growth and lifelong connections. The fall 2024 program kicks off Sept. 23 and runs through Dec. 4. Full details and sign-up information can be found at SJNYconnect.com.

Mentee Experience: Michelle Powlette ’24
Michelle Powlette ’24 shared her transformative experience as a mentee in the spring 2024 program. She was paired with Yalto Haibatov ’19, a Human Services Leadership major and counselor at New York Cares.

“Upon returning to school as an older student, I realized I never had a mentor growing up. I thought having a mentor would help me navigate college better, establish meaningful connections, and guide me to have a fulfilling time at St. Joseph’s,” she said. “Even though I can be an introvert, I decided to take a leap of faith and join the program.”

She felt an immediate connection with her mentor.

“Our first conversation was warm and comfortable. We took turns speaking and listening, and it felt like an instant friendship,” she recalled. “My mentor was easy to talk to and showed genuine interest in my schoolwork and experiences at St. Joe’s.”

Ms. Powlette recounted a specific instance of valuable guidance, noting, “My mentor suggested I try volunteering with New York Cares, which I did, and it has been a fantastic experience. She also encouraged me to build relationships with my professors and provided clarity on my career path.”

The knowledge and skills she gained were invaluable.

“Participating in the mentor program … provided essential information to help in my educational and life journey,” she said.

“I would like to become a mentor in the future to share my experiences and help other students connect and thrive,” she added.

“Joining the mentor program can help you build a lifelong relationship and gain exclusive insights,” Ms. Powlette said.

Mentor Perspective: Antoinette ‘Annie’ Fariello ’14
Antoinette Fariello, a 2014 alumna and associate director of strategic planning at Wavemaker, was paired with Cristina Costantino ’23.

“I was interested in joining because I remember the confusion post-graduation. I wanted to help the next generation of advertising and marketing professionals understand the field and find their passion,” she said.

Ms. Fariello said her relationship with her mentee was highly productive.

“Cristina was proactive, prepared, and eager to learn,” she said. “Our sessions deepened her understanding of the social media landscape and how various tactics could be used in her roles. She always asked thoughtful questions and came prepared for each session.”

Ms. Fariello encourages other students and alumni to participate.

“Do it! As a graduating senior, it is so beneficial to chat with someone actively in the field you’re looking to join,” she said. “For mentors, it’s an opportunity to help out the next generation and set them up for success.”
