SJNY graduates inaugural MSW class and establishes new scholarship

St. Joseph’s University, New York marked a significant milestone this May with the graduation of its inaugural class of Master of Social Work (MSW) students.

Additionally, the University proudly announced that a new scholarship has been established for MSW students at the Long Island Campus: the Kevin Noonan, Jr. Scholarship in Social Work, funded by Kevin Noonan in honor of his late son. Mr. Noonan previously established The Kevin Noonan Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and providing support to individuals affected by mental health challenges.

Over two dozen students received their MSW degrees during the University’s commencement ceremony at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. In addition to commencement, the first cohort of SJNY MSW students was honored in a special pinning ceremony held on April 19 in the cafeteria of the newly constructed Student Center on the Long Island Campus.

The event brought together students, faculty and family members to recognize the achievements and hard work of the future social workers.

The Long Island Campus celebrated its first MSW graduating class at a special pinning ceremony.

“I have a few different goals, including working as a school social worker in one of the school districts in our local communities,” said Alexandra Ehrhart, an MSW graduate who previously earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Joseph’s in 2022 and was a two-sport student-athlete.

“I hope to make a difference in the lives of the students I work with, as well as work to make a difference in the community,” she added.

Ms. Ehrhart’s aspirations extend beyond school social work, as she also aims to work in a pediatric unit in a New York City hospital.

“I would love to work as a social worker in a pediatric unit to help children through their scary times and instill resiliency and hope in them, as well as help their families facing challenges,” she said.

Reflecting on her experience at St. Joseph’s, Ms. Ehrhart expressed her gratitude, noting, “SJNY has prepared me for my career by teaching me valuable lessons not only that have helped me in my career but also in life. Each professor I have had has pushed me to be the best version of myself and has challenged me to take risks and be confident in doing so.”
