Vision Long Island presented St. Joseph’s University, New York with the 2023 Long Island Smart Growth Award for Community Leadership this June at the annual Smart Growth Awards.

The group honors projects that advance infrastructure growth in communities on Long Island. The University was recognized at a reception held at Crest Hollow Country Club for its long history of community involvement and contributions to the revitalization of Patchogue Village.

“It’s an honor to receive the Community Leadership Award,” SJNY President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., said. “This recognition is a testament to our longstanding partnerships in the communities we serve.”

St. Joseph’s works extensively with the Patchogue-Medford Library, Patchogue Theatre, and Plaza Cinema and Media Arts Center in sponsoring community programs. Other partnerships include Gateway Playhouse, Long Island Ducks, Suffolk County Marathon and Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood.

“Our faculty, staff and students have actively participated in numerous programs and initiatives that have improved the quality of life for our local community organizations and residents,” said Gail Lamberta ’82, Ph.D., associate dean for community development.

Students and faculty in the Department of Biology participate in regular cleanups of Patchogue Lake and its neighboring trails, and conduct water research to preserve the health of species in the lake. Moreover, construction of the Long Island Campus’ new Student Center utilized energy-efficient strategies and systems. Sustainable features include solar shading devices and low-flow plumbing fixtures, which were recognized by Vision Long Island.
