I am especially proud of our latest issue of SJNY Magazine.
This edition coincides with the 375th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the order which founded our University over one hundred years ago. The stories within these pages reflect the legacy set forth by the Sisters, reinforced by our commitment to excellence.
As we look back on the history of the Sisters, we not only honor those who founded St. Joseph’s University, New York in 1916 (then known as St. Joseph’s College for Women), but those who have and continue to dutifully serve our community as educators, administrators, alumni and faculty.
It is with the heaviest of hearts that in this issue we honor the legacy of Sister Mary Florence Burns ’46, who passed this year, not long after her 100th birthday. As we mourn, it is important that we also celebrate the light and warmth she brought to students in her roles as an English professor, academic dean and vice president of academic affairs.
As a function of the University’s Long Island and Brooklyn campus ministries, students were given the opportunity to honor the Sisters’ 375th anniversary in Kansas City, celebrating with others from across the country under once-in-a-lifetime circumstances.
In this issue we also shine a light on the achievements of our students, faculty and alumni. You will find stories from across our community that symbolize and uphold the values the Sisters set out to establish when founding their order more than three centuries ago.
Nowhere is this more evident than during our annual Esse Non Videri Gala. Our newest honorees have extraordinary talent, drive and compassion, and are using the tools and knowledge bestowed upon them by St. Joseph’s University to leave their mark on the world.
As you read about members from our community and all that they have accomplished, keep the Sisters of St. Joseph in your mind and spirit as none of this would be possible without them.
With gratitude,
President
St. Joseph’s University, New York
